MARDOG Duo Wedge — Foundation Bite Wedge

Handmade in Poland · Two Handles · Brass Ring & Nylon Strap · For Young & Intermediate Dogs

Every great biting dog started somewhere. The MARDOG Duo Wedge is built for the foundation and intermediate stages of bite development — a smaller, softer biting surface that builds confidence without overwhelming a dog that's still learning the game. Two rigid left and right handles give the handler clean presentation control, while a nylon strap and brass ring let you attach a lead for prey drive work and motion-based exercises. This is the wedge you start with. The MARDOG Trio Wedge is where you go when your dog is ready for more.

  • Smaller, softer biting surface: Sized and constructed for dogs in the early-to-intermediate stages of bite development. Easier to grip, less intimidating, and designed to build confidence and correct mechanics before the dog moves up to harder equipment.
  • Two rigid handles — left and right: Solid handle construction gives the handler precise control over presentation angle and lateral movement, letting you shape the bite and reward clean grip from either side.
  • Nylon strap with brass ring: Attach a lead to the brass ring and introduce motion — dragging, swinging, and prey-style movement that fires up drive and teaches the dog to chase and commit to the bite target.
  • Drive-building ready: The brass ring attachment point makes this wedge a natural tool for prey drive development exercises, not just static bite work. Motion is one of the most powerful drive amplifiers at this stage of training.
  • Handmade in Poland by MARDOG: Built to the same quality standards as the full MARDOG equipment line — inspected before shipment and constructed to hold up through the repeated sessions early bite training demands.

Duo Wedge vs. Trio Wedge — Which One Does Your Dog Need?

  • MARDOG Duo Wedge (this item): Two handles, smaller and softer biting surface, brass ring for lead attachment. The right starting point for young dogs, dogs new to bite work, and intermediate dogs still building grip confidence and mechanics. If your dog is learning what to bite and how to hold it, start here.
  • MARDOG Trio Wedge: Three handles (left, center, right), larger and firmer biting surface. Built for mature dogs with established grip and the jaw strength and drive to work hard on heavier equipment. The natural next step once your dog has outgrown the Duo.

Using the Brass Ring — Prey Drive Work

  • Lead attachment: Clip a long line or lead to the brass ring and drag the wedge along the ground or through grass to trigger prey instinct. Most dogs — especially young Malinois, Shepherds, and high-drive breeds — will light up immediately when the bite object moves like prey.
  • Building the out and re-engage: The ring also allows you to withdraw the wedge quickly and cleanly after a bite, creating the separation needed to build a sharp out and an explosive re-engagement on the next rep.
  • Motion first, grip second: At the foundation stage, getting the dog excited about the object matters more than perfecting the grip. Use the brass ring to create that excitement — clean mechanics come once the dog is genuinely committed to the bite.

Quick tip: Resist the urge to move up to harder equipment too soon. A dog that bites confidently and fully on the Duo Wedge is ready for the Trio Wedge. A dog that's gripping tentatively or releasing early is telling you the foundation isn't there yet — stay on the Duo and build what the dog needs before adding difficulty.

Made by MARDOG in Poland. Each wedge is handcrafted and inspected before leaving the facility.

FAQs

What age or experience level is the Duo Wedge appropriate for? The Duo Wedge is designed for young dogs being introduced to bite work and intermediate dogs still developing grip confidence and mechanics. There's no strict age cutoff — a 2-year-old dog new to protection sport belongs on the Duo just as much as an 8-month-old puppy starting drive work. The question is where the dog is in their development, not how old they are. When the dog is biting fully, confidently, and with consistent mechanics, it's time to consider the Trio Wedge.
What is the brass ring used for? The brass ring on the nylon strap is your attachment point for a lead or long line, which opens up prey drive exercises that static wedge work can't replicate. Dragging the wedge along the ground, swinging it in an arc, or pulling it away as the dog approaches are all techniques that use motion to amplify drive and build the dog's desire to chase and commit to the bite target. It's one of the most effective tools at this stage of training.
When should I move my dog up to the Trio Wedge? When your dog is biting the Duo Wedge with full, confident grip — driving in hard, holding through resistance, and showing no hesitation or early release — they're ready to be introduced to the Trio Wedge. If you're seeing tentative bites, shallow grip, or a dog that backs off under any pressure, stay on the Duo and keep building. Moving up too early puts a dog in a position they're not ready for and can set the training back.
Can the Duo Wedge be used for titled dogs doing maintenance work? Yes — the Duo Wedge isn't only for beginners. Titled and experienced dogs can benefit from occasional sessions on smaller, softer equipment as a confidence refresher, a low-intensity warm-up tool, or for working through specific grip mechanics without the intensity of full advanced equipment. Many experienced trainers keep both wedges in rotation for different purposes.
How do MARDOG wedges compare to other brands? MARDOG is a well-regarded Polish protection sport equipment maker with a reputation for consistent handcraft quality across their full equipment line. Their wedges are built to the functional standards that working dog sport requires — appropriate material density, solid handle construction, and reliable build quality that holds up to repeated high-drive sessions.
